#415 – Trickster God
The gods don’t always take a direct interest in the doings of mortals. We prefer to depict them as detached and disinterested, and certainly the actions of our main characters are beneath their notice. After all, you may be aware of the anthill’s existence, but you don’t follow the lives of individual ants, do you?
But we’ve made an exception for Morth, since he’s actively trying to gain notoriety and a promotion (Even then, it seems he mostly deals through middle-management – Kevin). The activation of the artefact, and the manifestation of the greater daemon (a vanishingly rare occurence in modern times) must have glowed hotly enough to attract these two cruel deities’ baleful attention. At least for a moment. Now they’re probably watching cartoons.
And that’s just for Ash and Haberley.
That was awesome.
From now one whenever I roleplay my character is going to keep a bouncy ball just for an occasion like this.
my only question is, what other situations was Morth prepared for besides this one that would warrant carrying a ball around?
Emergency tennis game.
good point. cant tell you how many times I’ve been asked for a pickup game, only to discover none of us have a ball
in that universe, i think it’d be best to pack the least practical things in case of an emergency.
What do you mean, ‘other situations’?
pwned by a mortal no wonder he wanted to switch channels.
also quite ironic both of them are watching guess what happens to their folowers is interesting enough to keep them from each others throat.
The patterner could easily be watching this, not watching this, just pretending to watch it, and under the delusion that he’s watching it all at the same time, as well as rooting for the mortal, not rooting for him, wanting to help the mortal, wanting to screw the mortal over, and rooting for the demon dog all at the same time.
As for the Hound, one of his greater demons, a manifestation of a shard of his divine will, has just been summoned unexpectedly, so yeah, he’s going to be interested.
Now did he always have that tennis ball on him or did he magic one to use? Oh the wonders of universe.
Shield was still up, Morth knows how to keep a cool head. Now to watch him redirect them at Rogue for being a cat.
Damn, Morth really is the master of Deception. Able to trick a higher level monster with that simple little trick is gold.
I know the symbols in panel 3 are probably a case of just getting heavily bitten, but I want to think that it is him performing a “summon tennis ball” spell. How (and why) else would he have access to a tennis ball?
Morth has balls stashed all over his temple. In case of ball emergency.
I suppose though that in his case, eyepatch emergencies would be a much bigger deal, he’s already had one.
Ah, it is rare that I laugh out loud like that for a webcomic :)
I love the gods’ reactions !
Morth really knows his daemonology to pull that one off.
The ball might even me an illusion; I’d expect master of deception to learn something like that for their trade. Also totally justified that the gods bothered with that; it would be a shame for them to miss something like that!
“#1 Puny mortal” glove XD
Well, he DID manage to summon a greater daemon, even if the wrong one. That would of warranted some kind of attention. And since it was Morth that pulled it off, that would of warranted the Patterner’s attention.
The expressions are terrific, but you guys win for the Up reference.
Wait a second … It is spherical, greenish-yellow and has lines running on it in a strange, winding, infinite pattern ? In retrospect, tennis balls are obviously patternari icons / artifacts.
… you magnificent bastard. You’ve figured it out.
I always knew those pricks down at the courts were into something big!
MY GOD
OH SHIT
$#@%!!!!!
You caught me! >_>
(Actually, I’m a cross-discipline cultist. Pattener artifact, but it summons a flesh worm. Because I have the Hound’s thirst for destruction.)
Bahahahahaha! That was… that was just-bahahahahahha!
The Dog twas distracted by one of the oldest tricks in the book. To fool an archmage Takes great power, for an Idiot something shiny will suffice.
What about an Idiotic archmage? Something Shiny and powerful, mayhaps?
For an idiot archmage, the Holy Sphere of Tennisment will work…
Make sure to tell him it gives +20 Intellect. Not only will he go after it, he’ll grab half a dozen of his buddies to help!
Huh. Didn’t see that coming.
Now THIS is how you keep the Greater Daemons of Hound in check. Luckily they aren’t Too Dumb to Fool.
Which also begs, is that an Idiot Ball?
I don’t think so. After all, Morth is not known for holding the Idiot Ball, and he’s got quite a grasp on that :p
ROFLMFAOSHITISM.
(Rolling on Floor Laughing My F***ing A** Off So Hard I Think I S*** Myself)
I think it’s official. The site comments have usurped the forum comic threads.
I don’t quite think so Pix. I use both the comment and forums whenever possible. Loved the last panel gag this week.
DIRTY TRAITOR, *GET BACK IN THE FORUMS WHERE I HAVE JURISDICTION OVER YOU*
…please? o_o
I just had to use my bad voice acting skills for this comic.

Hound’s expression does it for me.
Did he just pull that ball out of his robe? XD Guess he’s missing one, now.
Dirty jokes aside, this comic was amusing. XD They all seriously turned to watch the non-existent ball bounce away!
Thinking of up, do some of the lesser daemons have the sheer level of stupidity of Doug?
Squirrel!
Hi! I just killed you!
Finally saw that there was now a comment section. Only one thing to say, love the dark humor and…SQUIRREL!
YES! THE RETURN OF THE DARK GODS!
Seriously, the arc that focused on their poker game is still my favorite in the series.
Morth is a cool customer. Tennis balls are the obvious thing to have about one’s robes…
…In a non-explicit way.
The squirrel image made my day, thank you guys!
I do like the fact that the Bulldog is interested in the ball while the Rottweiler and the Doberman are still in full Greater Deamon God mode.
You never know when an impromptu squash game may begin.
Awesome! Stunning! And so wonderfully, ‘doggy’. Made my day – and the bonus squirrel made my week :-)
Loved watching the eyes change as the mystic power of the ball took hold…
Any chance you’ll sell prints of this?!
SQUIRREL!
Oh, yes. My dad’s favorite meme.
Tis funny at best. Yes, I enjoyed that, now we just see what happens next.
Where did the ball come from, anyway?
Holy Crap I love the Patterner! How can he radiate so much joy without a face? Is it wrong I find these demon dogs adorable? because I love dogs : D
