#417 – Mark Of The Black & White Beast
Hello guys, Lothar here.
So as you may not know, my wife Raye moved from America two years ago to live with me. She’s now coming to the end of her fiancée visa which means we now have to apply for her Indefinite Leave to Remain, which basically means she can stay in the country as long as she wants. This also means she can leave the country to visit America without running the risk of not being let back in.
The problem? The application costs damn near £1000. Which is a bit of a financial burden. Long story short? We’d greatly appreciate it if you have any spare cash you don’t have a particular use for, if you would be so kind to donate it to use to help us pay for this. Whatever you can spare will be fine. And don’t feel bad if you can’t, we only ask it if you can. Any help would be fantastic and you have our eternal thanks.

Churchill! Huzzah!
English patriotism kicked in. I regret nothing.
GAWD SAEV TEH QWEN!!!1!!!1!
Waitwaitwaitwait.
Chosen of the deciever.
So there’s the chosen of Fernex, Hound, and the Soulthirster too.
So there’s Chaos United/Undivided too.
Shiiiiiii-
More likely, Kevin is demon of the lying god, and is therefore lying to Morth, using lies.
Itz nawt teh liez itz legit i swearz eet :p
I wouldn’t put it past Kevin, or even past the patterner to lie to Kevin about it so that he would then lie to Morth about it, but from the way the story is going, it won’t matter. Remember Chekov’s gun? Most of it is irrelevant here, but the biggest part of that story is that the gun is mentioned as loaded.
See, telling Silas ‘you are the Patterner’s chosen’ has absolutely no story purpose at all if it’s just a trick, as it will amount to nothing. Especially since he’s being told this in the middle of a battle and we KNOW the Patterner genuinely did enjoy that Morth tricked the demon-dog. It’s too serious in tone to be used for comedic effect, even if this is a comedic webcomic.
Even if it’s just a trick, this will come back and serve some point in the story.
Apologies if my post made it sound like I thought it was a trick for no purpose. I’m projecting a bit here, but I’m pretty sure that it’s in a Patternari mindset to lie in order to further ones own goals, as opposed to just for the hell of it.
Mind you, given the nature of the Dark Gods, there’s probably a fair amount of lying for the hell of it too. Just this time, I think there is a purpose.
Occasionally, even liars tell the truth.
If the villagers had remembered that, the local wolves would have been stopped before they could sacrifice him to The Hound’s demons.
Wait… I mean Peter wouldn’t have gotten eaten by wolves if the villagers had remembered that.
…
Ok. So there’s not much difference in those examples. Either way, I don’t think that Kevin is lying. After all, it WAS a good joke!
SSSSOOOOOOOO Lothar when will you use your hand that is a gun that is also pointed Nicely at the nice badger???
That would require the shooting to have more effect than it did in the second panel.
Is it just me or does this mean the gang is ****ed?
They’ll probably have SOME chance to escape. After all, Morth isn’t the smartest one out there and they DO have a certain amount of luck and timing on their side.
Although I fully expect someone’s tail to get caught in a door again.
yeah thats to be expected though itd be hilarious if it wasnt virus for once.
Douchebadger. Such a perfect word.
agreed.
nice length, rolls of the tong with ease, a bold title but not one that demands respect.
quite befitting of such a man.
And the first step, to the next incursion has been taken.
Why do I get the feeling that this “other way” will lead to something else, like becoming a lesser demon instead of the full fledged eldritch god he wants to become? There’s so many ways one could interpret what he said and if there’s one thing I know from myths and stories, it is to always get the full details especially if there’s a transformation involved. Case in point: Madoka.
Chaos spawn does sound like a suitable way to be rid of Morth
It also stands to question how much of his current personality and memories, even his very soul will remain when this “other way” is obtained. He’s supposed to be intelligent, did he even consider this stuff? Surely he’s not the first to attempt “Ascension” and come this close. After all, demons apparently can have Chosen. This implies the existence of other Chosen.
Also, I reeeeeally don’t like the “hehe this idiot is totally gonna get screwed over” look Kevin has in the penultimate panel. … Yes, he’s an eye. But that’s TOTALLY the vibe I’m getting.
Then again, I could just be paranoid… which not unreasonable when you’re talking about The Patterner and his lesser demons.
My current theory for the “Other Way” is that Morth will need to sacrifice the Cerberus.
But then again, I have the feeling that Morth might just end up being the first Priest who serves all four of the Dark Gods. He’s got the anger, he’s got the scheming, he’s got the false eye, so all he needs is a kinky girlfriend!
That handmaiden might work out.
Oh,.,oh dear. Like, oh, serious, fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Eh. I’m not too worried.
Morth talked for a minute and hasn’t shot them yet, so their odds of survival went up by several orders of magnitude during the conversation.
I agree. Look out for that sense of humor, Morth.
I bet Virus has been waiting for this entire comic arc to use the term “douchebadger”.
That’s Harry =P
Virus writes the comic, dude.
Virus wrote -this- comic, anyway. Also a lot of this storyline, I guess, but Lothar has the majority of the writing credit to his name.
Ah, right. My apologies, Silver.
No worries. Just clarifying for you :) Credit where it’s due, and all that.
Speaking of Virus its fun to see both Harry and Lothar shooting at our beloved Douchebadger, with Rogue charging at him…while Virus seems content on staying back a bit. We know he’s supposed to be the book smarts guy but still…
He has actually pulled a gun, I drew that much. I just parked the speech bubble on top of it. I figure he’s a cooler head in this situation, perhaps waiting for a better opening. Unlike Harry, driven by rage, Lothar, driven by being Lothar, and Rogue, wanting to close to melee.
Or maybe he just rolled poorly for initiative.
i think its the last one
Alright, two things.
One: Kevin’s dismissive tone of the sacrifice thing indicates that, yes, this is just to screw with Morth.
Two: Shouldn’t the mark be on both sides of his hand? He’s looking at his bare palm in wonder.
Re: Two: Yeah, the logistics of that panel were a bit tricky. That angle, with the staring face, close up hand and Kevin over the shoulder seemed the ideal dramatic posing, but if Morth was looking at the mark, the viewer wouldn’t be. Almost did put it on both sides, as though seared straight through, that might have worked. But in the end, if you imagine it animated, he would raise his hand and stare at the hand in momentary confusion and pain while the viewer sees it appear. Then turn the hand over to see the mark. You can see in the last panel that he’s turned the hand, giving the sugestion of that movement.
Or the dismissive tone means that Kevin is indulging Morth’s desire to kill some old thorns in his side on the way to the next plan.
I don’t think Morth is being lied to about the immortality and being the Chosen of the Patterner.
Well, maybe not the immortality. That remains to be seen.
Oh googaly moogaly. The crap doth hit the fan. And everything else as well. Oh dear. How will our heroes get out of this. Actually, my question is…what will happen to Blasphemy if they die? Namley Virus and Lothar since they are th only ones who can handle him.
I know! I’ll adobt him! Lol.
Anyone else thinking that Kevin is just doesn’t give a shit what happens next? sort of like “meh do as you will. Kill them or whatever, been here before, been a long day want to clock out and go home”
Because he seemed pretty damn dismissive about the whole sacrifices thing.
