#504 – Trigger Unhappy
Reposting this announcement, for those who may have missed it:
Exterminatus Now will cease updates in summer 2015!
When the current story wraps up, there might be two or three housekeeping strips to close things up, but then it’s “indefinite hiatus”. It’s become too much of a chore, and I want to have the time to do other things and work on other projects. I think twelve years is a pretty good run, and I thank all of you for your support. People have been very cool and understanding about the decision, which I appreciate!
I will still be creating, and attending cons, but under the banner of Perfectly Chaotic, which I’ll be sharing with my wife’s knit and jewellery projects. I’d be grateful if, when Exterminatus Now is all said and done, you’d continue to follow my updates:

I think I first started reading EN in its first arc, with the Soulthirster cultists, and here we are 12 years later. Thanks for all the amazing strips !
… and this one too ! And I will have the occasion to reiterate thanks for the future ones ;)
That was one very … spontaneous, heartfelt and matter-of-fact suicide attempt, pear Eastwood !
So if Eastwood survives this, we can look forward to him having a new main weapon? I’LL HOLD YOU TO THAT!
I’m kinda hoping for a portable flamethrower. It would go so well with his personality. Or, or… a UTS 15… pwease?
He’ll get an even bigger revolver.
One with eight bullets, and an underbarrel holdout derringer.
And 12 gauge caliber, too, loaded with holy silver slugs.
I was thinking an underbarrel flamer. The Inquisition can borrow those from the Ecclesiarchy, last I checked.
This shouldn’t be funny… but it is. Oooh the face…
Yep. Dark Humor at it’s finest. Horrifying and pitch black, but somehow still funny.
Upshot? This little conversation has bought some time!
Upshot? Don’t Harry wishes.
Sorry, saw the opening and had to take the shot.
*Takes a moment, then gets it.*
No no, don’t feel bad. It was a good use of an opportunity!
Go kid, go. You’ve got a bright future ahead of you.
roflmao! that damn gun! bet after all of this is over his going smash it to pieces until there is nothing left to salvage for materials.
hahahahaha! XD
Those strips! They’re updating so fast I’m getting daemon-bugs stuck to my glasses!
Sad that this strip is finishing up. It’s a bit like Girls with Slingshot, I feel like there’s still stories to tell, but oh well.
Was it ever explained why Virus isn’t allowed to drive or fly the ships?
nope. and it never will
ever
save the fact the final strip is just going to be a crashed ship and words damnit virus
I like the answer given by beige :)
But nope! I guess we’ll have to use our imagination, or turn to fanfiction writers^^
Someone should make it so they all turn into ponies just to fuck with Eastwood.
I’m sure someone already has. Rule 50.
Great work as usual on expressions, especially Vitani still seeming a little sultry despite being in her big daemon form.
Is this a setup for him throwing the gun down and it firing, severing a bell rope, and smushing Vitani?
The revolver has only seven shots, and all seven were fired to try to open the trap door.
He just needs to clap his hands and BELIEVE in bullets.
But you’re right. I hadn’t counted the number of bangs in that panel. On the other hand, there’s still a possibility of a bell fall courtesy of Lothar ‘No-Such-Thing-As-Overkill’ Hex.
:/
There’s no point if you’re not enjoying it anymore, but it will be sorely missed – I follow well over 50 webcomics and this is one of my top 5. Might have to start re-reading the archives to get my fix…
Thanks, that means a lot! I’ll miss it too, but I’m just getting too old for this shit.
I’ve probably read through the whole archives about a dozen times. Thanks, Virus, and the rest of the crew, for making this story in the first place. Hopefully the many, many laughs were worth the effort. Best of luck moving forward!
You said “whoreson”. You have been playing Witcher III: Wild Hunt. Admit it. Now, or else I’m raddovid in disguise.
If I had, there likely wouldn’t be a comic up. Also, this script was written several years ago.
I feel like it’s a Red Dwarf-ism, but I can’t find such a quote. “Whoreson” is pretty Shakespearian, but I haven’t read much Shakespeare. Maybe I made it up after all!
It’s pretty common for gritty medieval-type worlds like The Witcher and ASOIAF. And to a lesser extent, Tortall and Dragon Age. Aside from that, it crops up rarely, but often enough to get some exposure.
When it’s all over, will we see a complete print volume of everything? :3 I started reading this as a wee lad when it was merely 15 or 16 pages in.
I will look into the possibility! Seems a shame to let 500-some comics go to waste.
Damn, this isn’t a terribly great year for webcomics I follow. First Cut Loose ends, then Beyond the Veil is declared dead by its crew, and now EN is ending after this arc is done…It’s a good thing I have others to follow, and may find more in the future.
Well, most of those are almost a decade old. Not all comics last more than that, and those who do normally end up being caricatures of themselves.
Plz dont end this series. Plz no :’(
Plz don’t end bionics :(
I like how East shoots seven times at the door, and then the Revolver is empty when he tries to shoot himself. Nice little detail!
Hilarious, just hilarious. A shame you won’t have time, the last few pages are just way too good. (We’d be OK with monthly updates….) Well, gl;hf!
I’m gonna miss Eastwood’s faces.
I’ve been an avid reader since #127 (18/11/2005) and the expression on Virus’ face in #128 still makes me giggle every time I look at it. Right after that first strip I went back and read the whole lot. I can’t believe that this comic has been going for 12 years. All good things come to an end though and this was and is one of the best. I can’t wait to see how it all ends. Hopefully not with everyone brutally murdered.
On the subject of this strip, I just love how there is zero hesitation from Eastwood when he decides to end it all.
Speaking of first comics, was it ever explained why Virus isn’t allowed to drive or fly the ships?
Nope, we are still on the darkness on that one.
Wow, this feels like the end of an era. Been quietly following along since… 2005, and wow, that’s a whole decade I’ve been reading EN. Completely understand that it’s time to move on, but I’m really gonna miss you lot!
Leaving with a bang, I see. Or lack thereof, in Eastwood’s case.
Vitani might still decide to change that…
Sorry to see you ending a great run but perfectly understandable. It’s probably been asked and answered already, but is the series available for purchase?
Wait, do you mean “purchase” as in available in “printed form” or “purchase” as in you want to buy the rights to the series and expand upon it?
I can help out a bit with this question.
If the former: Yes, but only one arc so far, the Bookend Arc
If the latter,
KEEP YOUR FUCKING GRUBBY HANDS OFF YOU COCK-GOBBLING CUNT.
I might not have the right to speak for everyone, but I’ll fucking do it anyway. We’d all rather see this strip come to a dignified end than to see it revived as a shambling caricature of itself. Come up with your own fucking ideas if you want to try your hand at entertaining the masses. Chucking some money to take the reigns of a comic that people have literally grown up with and enjoyed since their childhood (Started reading when I was 8, now 21) to make it your own thing as someone who is an outsider of the core team is just an all-around jerkass thing to do and I can only hope they share my sentiments
Holy cats, calm the fuck down
Well, I wasn’t supposed to tell anyone yet, but I’ve already made the arrangements to buy out the current team and turn the comic into a serious gothic romance set in a High School in the land of My Little Pony. I’ll have to cut two of the main cast but I’ll appreciate your patience during the transition.
Can I buy a character slot as a shamelessly Mary-Sueish self-insert character who has all the powers and everyone wants to be?
A pleasure doing business with you, sir!
Wow. Strong reaction. Uh yea I have no interest in purchasing rights to anything. Besides, I have ZERO creative talent so yea wouldn’t do me any good even if I wanted. I’ll buy prints though for my own personal entertainment.
I just got into this webcomic. It’s sad to see it end so soon. But thanks for the memories. Although, For this Comic though, It was funny to see Eastwood’s “Oh hell no” face. lol
Eastwood will avail himself of a weapon with more capacity than a revolver if he survives. And maybe demand a mindwipe.
It’s hard to believe i’ve been reading this comic for 12 years. I’ve been reading since year one (( thanks to fireball20xl, and the best banner I ever accidently clicked.))
I’ll miss the Exterminatus Crew, and will always have a small fire of hope that one day the hiatus indefinte will lift… I wish you the best with any and all future ventures. Thanks.
Just as a reminder, fireball20xl has been almost completly erased from the internet due to the founder Psyguy’s love for lolis, or the grooming of lolis.
Psyguy once offered to host us on that site. Sure glad we turned him down. Ugh.
Oh yes, that was a thing once, wasn’t it?
Glad you didn’t take him up on that. I fear what influence he might have had as the host.
I… don’t want to know, do I.
Well, that depends on you. For me he loss of this guy wasn’t really a tragedy, since this and twokinds are the only furry ones I read. Anyway, here is one of the many tumblr blogs about it.
http://superpsyguy.tumblr.com/
I still can’t believe that Markiplier’s brother is the one who writes TwoKinds, it’s just so unexpected
Lol’d so hard. Made me want to run a Dark Heresy game again.
His last bullet was discharged before she shows up. That’s why you count tout shots, so you always have one more… for yourself, if necessary
There’s a second edition now that uses more flexible character creation similar to the other 40K gamelines like Only War and Black Crusade. Some of the mechanics are a little wonky (acolytes now use influence rather than money to get equipment), but it’s easy enough to houserule them out and bring back bits of First Edition to take their place, or, in the case of my example, use both.
You know you’ve been left to die horribly when even your last bullet fails you.
Geez, first the Leyana chick, now her? Can’t believe I am saying this, but Eastwood is really picky about women. Must be like with Pepe Le Pew, it’s only fun when he’s doing the chasing.
*sigh* and another of my favorite webcomics ends, the creator moving onto something they feel is more fulfilling but is ultimately less successful… just like Dominic Deegan.
Gonna be depressed about this the whole day now. Because it’s not like there’s any other 40k inspired brilliance being thrown down. *goes to mope*
Oh you’ve got it entirely backwards. I’m selling out! I’ll be doing fan-art at cons instead of original stuff, and make a killing doing it! The EN stuff never made me a penny!
Don’t be so sour grapes. Fact is, I would like to keep telling these stories, I’m just sick of them eating up all my free time. Getting too old for the late nights.
Well…I guess we all have to make a living, and I know where you’re coming from about how much time it takes. I tried making a youtube channel, but after hours of editing, writing jokes, and kicking my wire and soup can internet around enough to make it all upload, I only got…maybe 50 subscribers total? Not really worth the investment of time.
I guess I’m just upset because EN was always so….UNIQUE! 40k plus sonic and a certain amount of hilarious British Comedy and violence? We sure as hell don’t get that kind of entertainment in the states. If we want to see things blowing up, we need to go to…*shivers* Micheal Bay.
(For the record, I was joking, I’m not quitting because of anything to do with money.)
Thanks man, glad you can relate. If I was a better artist, I could churn these out quicker and still have time for a life. But I’ve always struggled. For such a simple style, it takes too long, and it’s never gotten any faster. I work a full time job, and I want my evenings and weekends to relax.
Thanks for being a fan.
I can upload a drawing i did of a sonic character. i’m telling you your a good artist. I make kids art look like gold xp take as much tie as you need to to draw these. no rush
There are others now. Eagle Ordinary tells the story of an Only War gaming group’s campaign and is excellent, if rather painfully slow to update. But if you’ve stuck with EN this long, that’s probably not such a hardship.
Well then, goodbye! So far my understandment goes, you will enter into the same state of CRHF: Update every blue moon. Please correct me if I am wrong.
It would be a lie to say that I am not sad for the end of this webcomic, which I have read since the introduction of Lothar. That being said, I prefer this to end in a good moment and not enter on a state that he only solution is to bring some sort of internet death angel.
Goodluck to the four of you on whatever have any of you decided to do.
By the way, what will happen to the forums?
Maybe? No plans, but in the future, who knows.
Thanks, it’s appreciated.
The forums are pretty dead as it is. They’re free, they’ll probably stay there. Were you a member?
Used to, haven’t post anything in years both there and on DGemu, which that account has been deleted due to inactivity on 2012. I was just asking, since the forums of CRFH and Fireball20xl have been deleted and only accesed by the wayback machine.
May this comic rest in Peaceful Pepperoni Pieces
Nice little detail with East using up all seven bullets trying to open the door and not noticing that he used them all up when attempting to off himself. I always knew that EN would end at some point but at least you are going out on your own terms rather than letting it shamble along like a withered husk. I’ll try to follow your new works as best as possible plus revisit the archives as well. Take care.
xp traitor! gun you always worked in the past. why now?
He wasted all 7 shots on a trap door, not the brightest idea he’s had, next time best remember to count the shots Eastwood
Not counting worked out for his inspiration, though. ;)
Also I just read and it’s ending? Damn, I’ve been reading and following this comic for years now (since 08) I’m really sad :(
But all good things must come to an end alas, good luck to you guys
And I’m watching you on deviant art so hey…maybe you’ll upload stuff on there? Anything really, I’ll happily look at it
I’ll be sad to see EN end, but glad that it’ll actually, well, *end*, rather than turn into some shambling zombie version of itself.
Thanks for the fun ride, guys!
What most people don’t know is that in addition to being the true ever chosen Hal was trained in the dreaded Arachne Ken, where in you cover the student in fly paper and throw them into a pit of starving spiders until they’ve either learned the ultimate berserker technique second only to the Neko Ken or gone completely insane. . . Harry’s father thought it was cute.

Sorry, I didn’t realize there were so many Ranma abridged parodies after looking through three of them to find the Neko Ken for dummies explanation I figured I should just give up.
Boy, I followed this comic since… I think partway through the first arc.
I’ve always loved what you’ve done with it, the humour, energy and fun time. Honestly, I’m sorry to see you go, but I understand you’ve got your own decisions to make and I’m happy that the pace of updates seem to be increasing in perparation for the end.
I may have joked around and messed with you guys in the past, but it was all out of love for what you guys do, so thank you. And take care!
Same guy here who came to disrupt your peaceful forum.
Anyways, I’ve got to say that the quality of your comic was/is straight out amazing. I read the whole series after accidently stumbling to your site, and even though I’m not great at critizising anything, the quality always stood at least on the starting level, there was no bad ones whatsoever.
And thinking that you all did this for free! Incredible, many who do comics as their living should be ashamed.
I’m looking forward the next (final?) strips!
Mmm, good as always.
I’ll miss this webcomic, gave me a lot of laughs over a couple of years and it always felt fresh.
And i’ll always thank you for telling what jaffa cakes were! I love those little things but never knew if they had a name.
Can’t trust anybody, not even your gun
Welp, gonna be sad to see you guys go, I’ve been reading EN since it’s inception on to the net. Here is wishin ya a good time Virus.
Just ya know, once done with this story line please make allow for printed version >.> cuz then ya can still make da money… kinda….
That was 7 shots
Seven! Seven shots! Ah-ah-ah!
Long-time reader (I even forget how I originally found you guys) and lurker. Just wanted to express my thanks for the laughs and the always-impeccable artwork. Best of luck!
Well fuck, this is one of my favorite web comics.
Holy fudge has it really been that long!? I started about 10 years ago and found this site through an old Sonic fansite (The Sonic Foundation) and someone had one of your old banners as a signature. (Smells like napalm in the morning) I’ve been an avid ready ever since. When I found out you guys were based in the UK (Geography is NOT my strong point so PLEASE don’t bitch me out if that’s inaccurate) my old crew & I started reading them out as scripts with English accents and would variate from character to character. (When Silas showed up, we had a field day running through Bond villains) It was a blast as was the series. I’ve never seen a Sonic fan series put in so much effort to create EVERY animal possible in the same style yet avoid hedgehogs like the bloody plague (Save for Bobbie. She’s a cutie ^-^) and so well written at that. Nothing like a well thought out lore to keep an audience asking for and wanting more. That, if nothing else, is what I will miss most. It’s what brought & kept me reading for a decade. This series will be sorely missed and I know I’m not alone when I say that. Exterminatus Now…and Forever.
Ha, great tagline ;) Thanks for sharing those memories! It means a lot.
For the record, I have been based in Alberta, Canada for the last five of those years. Met my wife through the forum, moved here in 2010.
DAWW! Too cute! ^-^ Isn’t amazing how fandom can bring people together? Also, I do recall the relocation period, but I knew about you guys WAY before that happened. By the gods, five years north of the U.S.!? What’s it like being so close to all this crazy!?
Wait a second, 7 shots in a revolver… a revolver has 6… guess he wasted that extra shot meant for himself on the trap door.
His revolver is modified to have 7 chambers, so he can do that Dirty Harry thing and always have at least one bullet left to shoot the person with.
I suppose I should ask, since the comic’s coming to an end.
Any personal favourite memories from all the years you’ve been working on the comic?
Oh, SoniCalvin, idea! May I suggest a full on FAQ for the cast and crew at EN? Save a headache and a flood of the same questions drowning out the inbox.
>Second to last panel
Wow…dark, dark, dark…
I’m amazed how funny this managed to be.
There’s something very wrong with… somebody here, but I’m not even sure it’s me.
Maybe it’s that guy three comments up
