#450 – Only You Can Prevent Wildfires
Hello, new visitors from the Guardian! Welcome to our comic, where we are currently featuring a bunch of rarely occurring side characters instead of our main cast. Whoops. Next week starts a new storyline! But for now, here’s some context.
Some prior storylines you might like to peruse:
“Graveyard Shift” – Get a crash-course in Mortish theology, as the guys encounter angels of the Death God in a cemetary late one night. A group of occultists have disturbed the peace of the dead, and the gang must descend into the catacombs to investigate.
“Shades of Black and White” – A plot to assassinate Inquisitor Lord Schaefer leads the crew on a race against time to rescue covert agent ‘Elusive Camel’ from ritual sacrifice at the hands of a powerful cult leader – an old face from Eastwood’s past. A face with distinctive striped markings.
“Big Trouble in Little Taika” – When Rogue’s beam sword (signature weapon of the Daemon Hunters) becomes depleted, the crew must travel to his home village to have it restored. There they find a culture in flux, and the rustic community’s changing relationship with technology makes it a target for a fanatic of the Dark Machine God.
“The Cesspool” – A routine interrogation gets weird, as the accused turns out to be a close ally from Lothar’s chequered past. The inquisitors are let into the secret underbelly of organised mercenary rings. Then Rogue and Lothar kick the shit out out each other.
“The Bookend of Unimaginable Power” – Eastwood’s new objet d’art starts more than conversation when our heroes’ home is invaded by elite assassins. A dangerous chessmaster wants the artefact for the dark power it contains. Eastwood wants it for holding up his books.
As for today’s comic:
Inquisitors Jonson and Blackwing head up the handsome and successful “B-Team” seen in the final panel. Other sightings:
“On the Other Side”/“Not a Bad Day’s Work”
“Technical Difficulties”/“Alas Poor Romantic Subplot”
And most recently “Lights, Camaraderie, Action”
This is the first speaking appearance for Inquisitor Deket and the “C-Team”. But they caused some havoc in “Meanwhile, In Heavensedge”. Their new recruit is Wildfire, whom we previously met in the twin arcs “Team Scramble” and “Voiding the Warranty” which start here.
(Paleontology pedantry: Yes, I know, dromeosaurids were feathered. But hey! Fantasy comic! Nobody ever accused us of zoological accuracy in our funny cartoon animals. So Seb remains a scaly Jurassic Park flavour of raptor (or deinonychus. I prefer deinonychus).)
Big big thanks to Dean for the article, and I hope some of you stick around and enjoy.
Luck is always the greatest skill a person could have.
Yeah but with someone like Wildfire on their team their luck may be the deciding factor between them and a nightmare-ish death.
…especially if you’re an Assassin. Just ask anyone who plays Maple Story.
Am I the only one who finds it nicely ironic that Wildfire caused a wildfire?
….oh my god I just got the pun of her name.
…Shouldn’t you have gotten it when they already did that joke?
I’m sure there’s a team that succeeds in removing threats without obliterating huge tracts of real estate. Of course we’ll never see them because we’re too busy looking at the teams that are taking out huge tracts of real estate.
I can sympathise with Sebastian.
Maybe they should be called the Demolition, or D-Team instead. I suspect all three girls enjoy destroying things, and ol’ Seb has to hold them in check as much as he’s able. Which is not very much at all.
Crazy C team, or Demolitons D-team?
The C stands for Collateral. :)
… Or in the thoughts of Eastwood….
C team is describing their other more valuable assets.
Trying to hold one woman in check is a full time job (and in honesty, is like trying to ice skate up hill), if you have 3, you just need to release control and try to jump out of the way when it hits the fan.
So, “A” is for Assholes, “B” is for Badass, and “C” is for Collateral? Seems like “D” is either going to be Dumbass or Dangerous
A fairly apt summation. Not that we did that on purpose – they’re A through C solely on the basis of the order in which we decided to make them into recurrant cast member teams. Four teams is probably a bit much though.
And potentially difficult to keep track off within plots
Actually, Seb being scaly rather than feathered makes perfect sense with this bunch–he *was* feathered, but plucked himself bald dealing with them. ;-)
Actually, I think that has more to do with the fact that he’s a T-Rex.
T-rex had feathers too.
T-rex may or may not have had feathers. Its ancestors and close relatives all seem to, but no fossil imprints have been found, and feather insulation may be disadvantageous for an animal that size. One theory is it had feathers while young, but shed them as it aged.
But either way, Seb isn’t a tyrannosaur. He’s a deinonychus.
+1 to y’all for going with deinonychus over velociraptor.
Seconded.
Deinonychus is like the irritated older cousin to Velociraptor, who has to deal with his pint-sized younger cousin’s “Tyrannosaur-sized” ego just because he was in Jurassic Park and is therefore ‘famous’.
Have +3 from me.
I wonder if this burning port on the background is somehow connected to Iron Man 3 ending…
Nah. I wrote this last October. Port Warehouse is just a nice, classic location to get burned to the ground.
I thought it was based off that one mission in Black Ops 2. I guess wanting seeing a port warehouse blow up real good is a recurring theme. Not to mention it is a fairly logical place to have a fight.
Ah, it’s good to see wildfire again. She’s Perky! :D
and I feel sorry for that poor raptor. still, it could be worse – he could end up on the A team ;)
So now we got three full teams of 4. Nice. And we probably still got enough side characters to form a 4th team (Elusive Camel, lion guy with robot eye and we know Simmons can fight). And I will pretend that the 4 general guys are another team.
Glad to see Wildfire again since we never really got any closure with her. And we get a glimpse of the C-team’s members personalities.
wel at least wildfire found a team she kinda fits into.
Well. They seem to be getting over Vince’s death quite well.
Actually, Vince was B Team.
That’s… what I meant. The guys from the B Team.
We don’t know how long ago vince died – though since it was a few months for A team between Vince’s death and the current strips, I think it would be safe to assume a similar amount time has passed here. ergo, though they probably still miss him, they’re most likely finished mourning.
Sebastian demonstrate his great potential for facial expressions right away :)
“Working off the vaguest of intel and hunches” I can just see a Xerxes at the very end of his patience telling Wildfire to “go .. fight a cult or anything… somewhere… in that kind of direction … anywhere but here ! Now get lost !” ;)
I really have the best of luck with avatars :)
Two things. One, “So now there’s three of them,” three teams that is, Team Eastwood, the B Team, and Team C. Two, looks like some of the guys’ insane luck rubbed off on Wildfire.
She was lucky right from the start, depending on how you define your goal. By skill or by luck, she usually managed to wreck stuff successfully. It just turned out that her employers didn’t want it wrecked. Nadia Deket often wants it wrecked.
“and we had a few in surprising parts of the world, including one in Israel who kept coming every week”
Wait am i your only regular Israeli fan, I’m sure i met another one in a convention some time ago.
You guys are having your own EN get-togethers without us?! Haha, no that’s cool to know, thanks for commenting :)
Wait, I thought *I* was the singular Israeli fan. Well, at least I no longer have to feel guilty about not spreading the EN love here.
Well thats just too bad XD
Refresh comic, and spot the subtle edit!
What are you talking about good sir? That was always there.
~This message brought to you on behalf of the Inquisition Coverups department. We were never here.
Did something change?
I think the transport looking helis are facing the other direction and dropping water. Is the fire truck new? Or is it the camera drone thing?
I’m torn between “Yay, Wildfire’s back!” and “EVERYTHING WILL BE GONE”
Perhaps the C Team is the one you send in when you want something so thoroughly obliterated that it vanishes from photographs.
I have three things to say
oh gods she’s back
cant wait for harry’s team to hear about this
and I JUST noticed the bee is a girl
I should probably point out that she’s a wasp. Much more inherent violence.
well, you do work on the comic, you’d be the expert, but I read somewhere that hornets are the most aggrassive and violent, though to be honest, wasps, bees, hornets, I’m utterly terrified of them all
I thought that too, but I have also heard that hornets are the least aggressive of the three as well, so rather than go on uncertainty I just stuck with what I knew. Which is that wasps are definitely vicious little bastards.
I’ll drink to that, or I would if I was old enough, seriously, I’m terrified of wasps, I have no idea if I’m allergic or not, and I also heard the wasps in japan get freaking huge, like, as big as my fist,
I was hoping someone would ask this before me, because 1. I can’t find it anywhere and 2. I’m a lazy bum:
So the silver… cat? Is Nadia Deket. What are Seb and the wasp’s full names?
By the way, on the subject of international fans, many hellos from Portugal. ;) Both me and my brother are regular readers of EN.
Olá, Portuguese fans!
I don’t believe their names are stated anywhere yet. They would get fuller intros at some point, but I like to let people ask. Lets us know you guys are interested :)
Nadia, I believe we upgraded her to mountain lion. Because we had too many plain ol’ cats running around. Her cohorts are Interrogator Sebastian Poe and Leyana Vaegan.
Apparently Silv is working on updating the cast page with the expanded cast. So stay tuned for that.
Hi! Alan, stupid quiestion, but… What Nadia’s eye color?
They are, according to every preceeding design image I’ve done over the past however many years, green.
Green? Oh, okey. Thanks.
Am I the only person who loves Wildfire’s EEEEEEE of glee?
It just seems so perfect for her.

You can call this fanart. 2 days, Paint Tool SAI, mouse.
That has got to be some kind of fanart record, at least for us. Sweet. :)
Up it goes!
Thanks ^^
Why does Sebastian’s outfit look like a cross between a Kung Fu uniform and a longcoat?
More importantly, where the fuck can I get one of them?
yay she’s back!
Anyone else notice that this is NOT the first appearence of this team?
They appeared back in December 2011 (minus Wildfire) in #388 ‘Meanwhile in Heavensedge’.

Fuck that, I’m just another dumb shit who didn’t read the description properly.
Oh, well. At least I recognised them without the description, there’s some nerdy pride in that.
They’re also amongst the group shot in Test Card FFffff, and slightly older designs appear for two of them as far back as here (and I shudder to link something so old and unslightly, but thems the breaks).
I do like the spotting without the description though. Always love it when people spot the subtle details. :)
That’s May 2010, and March of 2005. You may pick up the shattered fragments of your mind now.
Wow. Wildfire is perfectly set up for that sort of thing.
I think she will eventually rack up a body count that is greater than that of the eastwood team.
I give her… 1 year and 3 days after being hired before they call exterminatus on HER position.
YAY! I am a badass lizard now!
I give this team three says to live before Wildfire accidentally kills them all.
I notice that the banner at the top of the EN page changes between the A-team, the B-team, Lothar’s mercenary family, and the Daemon hunters, did you add that recently? because I think it only used to change between the A-team with Rogue and the A-team with wildfire
It’s done it for a while.
and there’s also the schaefer and Simmons too.
At least a year, at this point, though I add new ones occasionally when I can find appropriate images for them.
oh wow, then I am blind as a fucking bat, I did not notice the banner change to the different factions until JUST the other day
I can’t help but feel that you missed an opportunity to really drive the nails in for that poor dino…
A team could have found out about it and offered him drinks, telling him why and how they ditched her from the team….
Poor, Seb. I feel for ya guy. I feel bad for anyone who has to deal with me alone, let alone three people like me. On the other hand, this comic is well worth it just to see the looks on his face.So expressive! The only thing missing is a few expressive feathers on the top of his head. I know what you siad, but I admit, his second expression would have had the feathers pointing upwards in exclamtion while the third expression would have his feathers down in exasperation. Eh, oh well.
